LAZY DAZE WRECK / KELP

Lazy Daze was a World War I landing craft that, after her service was parked in the Point Loma Kelp and used as a fishing barge.  She was moored there for years until in the 70’s, after a storm she disappeared into the sea.  She was dove in to the 80’s but then was lost until about 2 years ago when the Crew of the Marissa re-discovered her whereabouts.  Only remnants of the massive ship remain.  Her ribs and winch are clearly visible, as well as a portion of her stern.  The wreck is not the only thing to see at this site though; large 20’ boulders that house a large variety of nudibranchs and lobsters surround the wreck.  Large Sheep head, Black smith, and Kelp bass also reside here. 

Depth: 75'-85’

ACROPOLIS KELP

A rocky out cropping that gives you the feel like you are in a Greek Colosseum.  This type of shelf like structure provides excellent housing for lobsters.  This site is home for lots of nudibranchs and other invertebrates.  The dense kelp that normally surrounds this site allows for amazing amounts of sea life both in the canopy and on the bottom.

Not actually in 7 fathoms, this site houses an amazing number of nudibranchs!  The rocky reef is a series of fingers that alternate with sand.  This site is directly in the middle of the kelp forests and there fore houses a ton of sea life.  The canopy of the kelp forests is just as amazing as the bottom.  We have had regular sightings of a 7-gill shark here too. 

Depth: 60’-75’

One of the most Shallowest dives off of the Point Loma kelp forests, with large boulders that reach up to 15’ high.  The Rock that gave this site its name looks like the bow of a ship, so be sure to look for this rock when you dive this great site.  Sea life includes, lobsters, sponges, octopus, and much more.   This is a great spot for beginners, open water classes, and people new to California diving.

The Ancient Sea Cliffs are believed to be the ancient shoreline of Point Loma.  The Ancient Sea Cliffs have an underwater structure that is unique from all of the other sites in the Point Loma Kelp.  The rocky reef is littered with small caves, crevices, shelves, and vertical cliffs as large as 30’ tall.  Tons of sea life can be found here, including nudibranchs, a variety of bass, bat rays, sea stars, and much much more.

Typical Depths: 75’-100’

If you want to experience a wall dive, this is the place to do it. Scripps Canyon is a great wall dive, with over-hangs and depths up to 300', this advanced dive is truly one of a kind. Nudibranchs cover the walls. Because this is a canyon, there is a chance for you to see some open water fish and sharks that follow the channel to shallower waters.

LAZY DAZE WRECK / KELP

Lazy Daze was a World War I landing craft that, after her service was parked in the Point Loma Kelp and used as a fishing barge.  She was moored there for years until in the 70’s, after a storm she disappeared into the sea.  She was dove in to the 80’s but then was lost until about 2 years ago when the Crew of the Marissa re-discovered her whereabouts.  Only remnants of the massive ship remain.  Her ribs and winch are clearly visible, as well as a portion of her stern.  The wreck is not the only thing to see at this site though; large 20’ boulders that house a large variety of nudibranchs and lobsters surround the wreck.  Large Sheep head, Black smith, and Kelp bass also reside here. 

Depth: 75-85’

ANCIENT SEA CLIFFS

The Ancient Sea Cliffs are believed to be the ancient shoreline of Point Loma.  The Ancient Sea Cliffs have an underwater structure that is unique from all of the other sites in the Point Loma Kelp.  The rocky reef is littered with small caves, crevices, shelves, and vertical cliffs as large as 30’ tall.  Tons of sea life can be found here, including nudibranchs, a variety of bass, bat rays, sea stars, and much much more.

Typical Depths: 75’-100’  

ACROPOLIS KELP

A rocky out cropping that gives you the feel like you are in a Greek Colosseum.  This type of shelf like structure provides excellent housing for lobsters.  This site is home for lots of nudibranchs and other invertebrates.  The dense kelp that normally surrounds this site allows for amazing amounts of sea life both in the canopy and on the bottom.

P-38 LIGHTENING

The P-38 Lightening went down off San Diego's coast on May 28th, 1943.  In a routine training exercise the WWII plane went down, the pilot escaped with minor cuts. This 67 year old wreck is in really good condition for its age and is covered in very large sea life.

SCRIPPS CANYON

One of the most Shallowest dives off of the Point Loma kelp forests, with large boulders that reach up to 15’ high.  The Rock that gave this site its name looks like the bow of a ship, so be sure to look for this rock when you dive this great site.  Sea life includes, lobsters, sponges, octopus, and much more.   This is a great spot for beginners, open water classes, and people new to California diving.

GOOSE BUMPS

Known for the numerous rocks that litter this site, and its inherent beauty.  Goose Bumps is covered in nudibranchs, and lots of fish.

Not actually in 7 fathoms, this site houses an amazing number of nudibranchs!  The rocky reef is a series of fingers that alternate with sand.  This site is directly in the middle of the kelp forests and there fore houses a ton of sea life.  The canopy of the kelp forests is just as amazing as the bottom.  We have had regular sightings of a 7-gill shark here too.

The morning of July 18, 1989 marked the day when the Ruby E would begin her new life as an artificial reef.  The Ruby E is intact and is completely covered with anemones and marine encrustations.   Although Fragile, she offers some amazing opportunities for beginning penetration and wonderful sea life.  The Ruby E has been down for 21 years and absolutely covered in life.

EL REY WRECK

In April 2, 1987, the El Rey is an old kelp cutter that was towed to the mission beach. Before a large crowd, a U.S. Navy Demolition Team attached explosives to her hull and with great fanfare detonated them.  The El Rey quickly and quietly slid below the surface and began her new life as an artificial reef.  After sinking, San Diego's newest wreck came to rest upright on the bottom.  The kelp cutting mechanism and the rudders were pushed deeply into the sand.  The years, heavy swells and currents have taken their toll and many areas of the superstructure and hull has collapsed.  A few areas of the wreck can be penetrated, but the wooden superstructure has deteriorated. However, the wreck provides a great opportunity for photographers as there is an abundance of marine life swimming around and living inside the wreck.  The El Rey is covered in large gorgonians.

The Ruby E is intact and is completely covered with anemones and marine encrustations.   Although Fragile, she offers some amazing opportunities for beginning penetration and wonderful sea life.  The Ruby E has been down for 21 years and absolutely covered in life.
